My tribulations for you: Paul wrote the Letter to the Ephesians from prison, and it is useful to remember why Paul was in prison. Ephesians 3:3 Parallel Verses [⇓ See commentary ⇓] Ephesians 3:3, NIV: "that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly." The continuing theme of submission is implied but not stated verse 22. On at least three occasions (chapter 1, chapter 3, and chapter 6), Paul either prays for the church or pleas for the church to pray for him. Prayer! Ephesians 3:3, ESV: "how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly." On average, then, a prayer is recorded every two chapters. The first paragraph in Chapter 3 is, in many ways, the key to this great letter of Paul to the Ephesian Christians. Ephesians Commentary Purpose and Themes. Ephesians 3:3, KJV: "How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,"

So often we pray out of our own lack of faith, out of our own spiritual poverty. views redemption as the theme of the epistle. Rather, we must learn to pray based on our belief in God's inexhaustible supply. Wednesday (Ephesians 10–12) 3:10 The purpose of this enlightenment is that through the church the multifaceted wisdom of God should now be disclosed to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 1:3: "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ." What is the theme or purpose of the parenthetical phrase? Some view 2:8-10 as the key passage and therefore conclude that the theme is “the Grace of God.” Others are struck by 4:1 and therefore view “our Christian calling” as the theme. We all love mysteries. << Ephesians 2 | Ephesians 3 | Ephesians 4 >> (Read all of Ephesians 3 ) The whole of chapter 3 is a parenthesis unfolding the mystery; and presenting at the same time, in the prayer that concludes it, the second character of God set before us at the beginning of the epistle, namely, that of Father of our Lord Jesus Christ; and this is the way in which it is here introduced. Major Themes in the Book of Ephesians Our Blessings in Christ – Ephesians 1:314 Our Position in Christ – Ephesians 2:13:13 Walking in Christ – Ephesians 4:16:9 I heard a story last week of a young boy who was severely impoverished.

Many others, in view of 2:11-22, consider “unity” as the central message. views redemption as the theme of the epistle. He lived his whole life with the passion to bring salvation to his own people, the Jews (Romans 9:1-3). His typically lucid style and clarity of thought present a forceful argument for this position. In his devotional commentary Ephesians: Pattern for Christian Living, Ray Summers [18] Ray Summers, Ephesians: Pattern for Christian Living (Nashville: Broadman Press, 1960). A: The opening address of Ephesians is to the church at Ephesus, meaning that this epistle was written to the Ephesians. Theme verse of Ephesians “Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called.” (Eph 4:1)

Paul wrote the letter to the Ephesians sometime in AD 60–61, around the same time he wrote Colossians and Philemon, as he sent all three letters by the hand of Tychicus, accompanied by Onesimus (Ephesians 6:21; Colossians 4:7–9; Philemon 1:10–12). The purpose of the book of Ephesians was to warn the church elders about the false teachers that were teaching a false gospel and to maintain their first love that they held when they first became believers. (See also my article here on a similar idea.) Here he begins to describe in full detail the great mystery which he had devoted his life to propagating around the world.

Ephesians is so broad, so sweeping in its content, that recognizing the underlying theme is easily missed. Paul doesn’t specify a specific heresy but does seem to want them to be identified with Christ and one in a sense of purpose.

One other major theme arises from the content of the Ephesians correspondence that I feel compelled to address. Ephesians 2:8-10: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. It is not uncommon in Greek grammar for an unstated verb or verbal idea, etc, to be understood from preceding verses. He had grown sick His typically lucid style and clarity of thought present a forceful argument for this position. You can see this theme in several of Paul's letters (Ephesians 1:7,18; 2:7; 3:8; Romans 9:23; Philippians 4:19; Colossians 1:27). Here is Ephesians 5:21-22 in the SBL Greek New Testament with my literal translation:

The call of Christ is a call to action, and Ephesians lays out God’s desire for your spiritual walk like no other book of the Bible.
