Cloud Cities and Tomás Saraceno’s Visionary Architecture Tomás Saraceno’s immersive installations are visually arresting spaces that challenge viewers’ relationship to the built world, offering models for the utopian cities of the future.
In May of 2012, The Metropolitan Museum of Art had its 15 th annual rooftop sculpture done by Argentinian artist Tomás Saraceno who took this as an opportunity to flex his originality and create Cloud Cities: 16 connected, angular domes clumped together like frothing bubbles on the museum’s Iris and B. Gerald Cantor roof garden. Tomás Saraceno’s immersive installation works are visually arresting spaces that challenge viewers’ relationship to the built world. Born in Argentina, Saraceno currently lives and works in Frankfurt, Germany. A seemingly endless landscape covered with a very thin layer of water erases the ground plane placing the subject matter in the middle of ostensibly null space. He creates inflatable and airborne biospheres with the morphology of soap bubbles, spider webs, neural networks or cloud formations, which are speculative models for alternate ways of living for a sustainable future. Cloud Cities at the Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin presents a large installation by the artist that occupies the entire space of the historical gallery.

This intricate installation that looks like a spider web made out of inflated bubbles has a touch of two elements: earth and air and the artist tried to reveal the interaction between human beings and environment with the use of “cloud cities”. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) presents the exhibition Tomás Saraceno: Stillness in Motion—Cloud Cities, by artist Tomás Saraceno, on view at the museum through May 21, 2017. An artist trained as an architect, Tomás Saraceno deploys insights from engineering, physics, chemistry, aeronautics and materials science in his work. A filigree of flying spheres caught in a maze of cobwebs, the show is reminiscent of both Buckminster Fuller's domes and Alex Raymond's hanging gardens. Tomas Saraceno on the Roof: Cloud City, his current project at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, opened on May 16 and will remain on view through November 4, 2012.

Over the past decade, Saraceno has established a practice of constructing habitable networks based upon complex geometries and interconnectivity that merge art, architecture, and science.
